How to Add Products to Your TikTok Shop

Article Takeaways

You don’t have to dance the viral dance to make a profit on TikTok. Through TikTok Shop, creators, influencers, and businesses can set up shop, display their products directly inside the app, and sell to nearly two billion users worldwide. They don’t even have to switch tabs.

"You’re taking those recommendations right there, and you’re closing the loop instead of having to send them to go someplace else."

Learning how to add products to a TikTok shop is the first step to a successful ecommerce (or affiliate) business. In this guide, we will walk you through everything you need to know, from the initial setup and syncing with Shopify to best practices and troubleshooting. Let’s start.

Prerequisites Before Adding Products

Ready to start uploading products to your TikTok Shop? First, take a step back and make sure you have everything you need. If you forget about any of these requirements, your listings will wait longer for TikTok’s approval, presuming they get approved at all.

Verified TikTok Seller Account

You must have an active and verified TikTok Seller Center account. TikTok requires either:

  • Individual sellers: A valid government-issued ID and a bank account under the same name.
  • Business sellers: Business license, legal representative ID, and a business bank account.

Your registration details (especially your name, address, and bank info) must be correct. If there’s a mismatch or inconsistency, you’ll face verification delays.

Complete Shop Profile

Before adding products, finish setting up your TikTok Shop profile:

  • Warehouse and return addresses
  • Shipping preferences
  • Bank account details for payouts
  • Store policies like returns and refunds

These aren’t optional. TikTok won’t let you upload products without them.

Understand TikTok’s Restricted Products Policy

TikTok has a long list of prohibited or restricted products. Make sure your items don’t fall under:

  • Counterfeits or replicas
  • Hazardous goods without proper documentation
  • Cosmetics without compliance certificates
  • Age-restricted products without legal approval

In case you have products that fit into this description, prepare safety data sheets and compliance certificates in advance to avoid future complications.

Prepare SKUs, GTINs, and Shipping Details

Before listing products, TikTok recommends preparing:

  • Unique SKUs for every item
  • GTINs/barcodes, if applicable
  • Accurate inventory counts
  • Package weight and dimensions for shipping
  • Any compliance documents required for restricted products (e.g., cosmetics, electronics, hazardous goods)

Product Setup Best Practices

You can make a decent profit as a seller on TikTok, but you must make an effort. Thoughtfully crafted, well-optimized, and easy-to-read product listings get better rankings and more eyeballs. Here’s how to make your TikTok Shop products stand out from the competition:

Use High-Quality Visuals

TikTok has made a fortune from video and accepts only top-quality visuals. Make sure your product images and videos check all these boxes before you submit for review.

  • Minimum recommended image size should be 640 × 640 px
  • Natural lighting and clutter-free backgrounds are preferred
  • Multiple angles and close-up shots for a 360-degree view
  • Short, vertical videos demonstrating your product in action

Optimize Titles and Descriptions

The internet relies on keywords for search and discovery, and TikTok is no exception. If you want ideal buyers to find your product, you need to follow these guidelines:

  • Include your main keyword within the first 60 characters of your title.
  • Write naturally instead of stuffing your descriptions with keywords.
  • Use bullet points in the description to highlight the product’s features.
  • Don’t forget to mention the product’s benefits and real-life use cases.

If you’re not confident in your writing, don’t worry. TikTok has a new AI Assistant that can help you generate the right description. You just need to enter a few keywords.

Set Competitive Pricing

Nobody likes paying more for a product than they need to. Keep your prices transparent, competitive, and synced across marketplaces. Here’s what you should do:

  • Check pricing trends within your category.
  • Offer bundle deals or discounts to stand out.
  • Sync your Shopify prices with TikTok Shop.

Map Product Categories Accurately

One of the top reasons listings get rejected is wrong category mapping. Always:

  • Choose the most specific category available.
  • Fill in all mandatory attributes TikTok requests (e.g., size, material, or compliance fields).
  • Double-check mappings if you’re syncing from Shopify because TikTok sometimes defaults to broader categories.

Preview and Optimize Listings

Before submitting for review, use TikTok’s listing quality score to check if your product ranks as Good, Fair, or Poor and follow the optimization tips TikTok provides to improve visibility and conversion.

Common Errors That Lead to Rejection

TikTok may reject your products if you make these mistakes:

  • Forget to add mandatory attributes (e.g., size, material, brand)
  • Map products to incorrect categories
  • Your titles or descriptions contain restricted keywords
  • Images or videos don’t meet TikTok’s quality requirements

Adding Products to TikTok Shop (Desktop)

There are several ways to add a new product to a TikTok Shop. Most users manage their catalogs in the TikTok Seller Center on desktop, so we’ll open up with this method.

Step 1: Open a new TikTok Seller Center account or log in to your existing one. From your dashboard, navigate to Products in the sidebar on your left. Click to access more options, then choose Add products.

Step 2: Under Add individual products, click on Add new product. In the upper right corner, you will see two additional options: Media Center and Add brand authorization

  • Media Center allows you to store all your product-related images and videos directly on TikTok, ensuring faster uploads.

If you want to add branded products to TikTok, click on Add brand authorization to obtain a brand authenticity badge.

Step 3: You will arrive at the listings page, where you will be asked to enter Basic information about your product, such as product name, category, and brand. This is also where you add product images.

Step 4: Next is the Product details section, where you describe your product and upload a video. You can also prompt TikTok’s new AI assistant to generate a description based on your keywords.

Step 5: Under Sales information, add product variants for different sizes, colors, materials, etc, and enter price and stock information for each.

Step 6: Add Product compliance information and SDS file if your product is classified as a dangerous good or contains any hazardous materials.

Step 7: In the Shipping section, enter package weight and dimensions, and choose a shipping fee option.

Step 8: Preview your listing. TikTok grades the quality of each listing, so check if yours is good, fair, or poor. If there’s room for improvement, follow TikTok’s recommendations to make it better.

Step 9: All done? If you’ve completed all the steps and are satisfied with the result, click on Submit for review in the upper right corner. The product will be added to your shop automatically after review.

Adding Products via TikTok Seller Mobile App

TikTok is a mobile-first social app, so no one will blame you if you prefer to run your business over the phone. Here’s how to add products from the TikTok Seller app.

Step 1: Head to the Play Store (if you own an Android) or App Store (if you have an iOS phone) and search for TikTok Shop Seller Center. Sign up or log in using your TikTok Seller Center account.

Step 2: Tap Products in the navigation menu to open the tab. Then, tap Add Products.

Step 3: Presuming this is your first time adding products to TikTok, select Manual listing.

Step 4: Enter product information and upload images and videos. TikTok’s AI Assistant can help you generate an engaging description.

Step 5: After you fill out all the fields, check TikTok’s improvement recommendations (if there are any) and tap on Submit for review at the bottom of the screen.

Tip for mobile-first sellers: When uploading via mobile, you can scan barcodes to autofill product data like SKU, GTIN, and attributes. You will be faster and less likely to make a mistake.

Adding Products from Shopify

If you already have a successful Shopify store, you can create a new shop on TikTok in under an hour. This method shows you how to sync your Shopify catalogue with TikTok Shop.

Step 1: Create a TikTok Seller Center Account if you don’t already have one. Then, go to Shopify Admin > Settings > Apps & sales channels > Shopify App Store and find and install the TikTok app.

Step 2: Under Get started with advertising on TikTok, click on Set up now.

Step 3: Under Set up Marketing, click on Connect to link Shopify with TikTok for Business. Log in to your TikTok for Business account to continue. After that, click on the Connect button once more.

Step 4: When complete, click Connect to link your Shopify to your TikTok Business Center account.

Step 5: Under TikTok Ads Manager, click on Create New and enter your business information. After you’re done, click Sign up and connect at the bottom of the page.

Step 6: Choose how you want to share your data. Shopify offers three options: Standard, Enhanced, and Maximum

Step 7: Next, click on Set up to enter your company information. Click Confirm when you’re finished.

Step 8: Click Finish Setup to complete syncing Shopify with your TikTok Shop.

Step 9: At this point, you will access your TikTok Seller Center dashboard through Shopify. To manage and edit synced products, locate the Manage and sync products tab in the sidebar on the right. (It’s in the Products section.) All the products you currently have in your store will be there. You can search for products by name and use filters to check their sync status.

Step 10: Keep an eye on the Action required tab. (It’s above the product search bar, between All and Synced.) If some products have failed to sync successfully from Shopify to TikTok, they will be there, requiring your attention. TikTok will tell you what went wrong and what to do next based on the product status. You will receive suggestions and optimization tips on how to improve each listing. Edit them individually or use the Bulk edit products option if you have too many listings.

Step 11: As a bonus step that will save you a lot of trouble when you start selling your Shopify catalogue through TikTok, let’s map your synced products. Don’t skip this if you can see the Map your products alert on your screen. Click Map now and match each TikTok product to a product on Shopify.

Quick Troubleshooting Tip:  If products fail to sync from Shopify, make sure every item has a unique SKU, and confirm your Shopify warehouse names match TikTok Seller Center.

Adding Products as an Affiliate

Right now, being a TikTok affiliate is one of the easiest ways to monetize content on the internet, but there’s a catch: not everyone can join the program. The eligibility criteria exclude every TikTok creator from outside of the US and the UK who has fewer than 5,000 followers.

Also, the TikTok Shop Affiliate Program requires you to apply as a creator or business. If all you have is a standard profile, we’ll show you how to switch to a different TikTok account.

Step 1: Go to TikTok and click on the hamburger menu at the upper right corner. Tap on Settings and privacy > Account. Switch to a Creator or Business account.

Step 2: Return to the hamburger menu and tap on TikTok Studio. Under Monetization, choose Shop Creator and follow the instructions in the application process.

Step 3: You can start adding products and earning commission as soon as TikTok approves your application. Log in to the TikTok Shop Seller Center using your Creator or Business account and open the Affiliate Product Marketplace to research products.

Step 4: Here, you can browse products by niche, category, or commission rate. When you find the perfect fit, select it and add it to your affiliate showcase.

Step 5: Promote a product in your videos and lives and tag them so shoppers can buy them via your affiliate link.

Avoiding Compliance Issues: Only add products from verified sellers to avoid counterfeit claims or restricted goods violations. Check each listing’s compliance status in the Affiliate Product Marketplace before adding it to your showcase.

Troubleshooting: Why Can’t I Add Products to My TikTok Showcase?

Your new product was rejected from TikTok Shop, and you don’t know why? This is frustrating, especially after you’ve completed all the steps and done everything right. Here are the typical reasons products get rejected or fail to sync, and what to do to fix the problem.

IssueCauseHow to Fix It
Account Type RestrictionsOnly Business or Creator accounts linked to an approved TikTok Shop can add products.Go to Settings & Privacy → Account and switch to a Business or Creator account. Then reconnect TikTok Shop under Monetization → TikTok Shop.
Product Sync IssuesShopify and TikTok Shop often fail to sync products due to:
• Missing or duplicate SKUs
• Mismatched warehouse names
• Outdated TikTok app connections
• Assign unique SKUs to every product.
• Match warehouse names in both Shopify and TikTok.
• Reconnect TikTok under Shopify Admin → Apps & Sales Channels → TikTok.
Restricted or Non-Compliant ProductsProducts that violate TikTok’s restricted goods policy or lack compliance documents are blocked from the showcase. In TikTok Seller Center → Products → Action Required, check flagged products. Upload missing compliance docs or edit listings to meet TikTok’s rules.
Pending Product ReviewsEvery new product must pass TikTok’s moderation. Reviews usually take 24–48 hours, but may be longer during peak times.Go to Products → Under Review in the Seller Center. Avoid editing listings while under review—it restarts the review clock.
Affiliate Program LimitationsTo add products as an affiliate, you must:
• Have 5,000+ followers
• Be in a supported region (US or the UK)
• Apply to the TikTok Shop Affiliate Program.
• If you’re outside supported regions, open a local TikTok Shop or wait for expanded eligibility.

  1. hi! What product attributes tend to perform best on TikTok Shop beyond just having a good title, images, and description? thanks!

    1. David Costarrosa

Hello Pam, products that perform best usually have a combination of clear value, visual appeal, and strong relevance to current TikTok trends. Items that can be demonstrated quickly, show a transformation, solve a common problem, or fit into popular content formats (such as “get ready with me,” lifestyle hacks, or unboxings) often see higher engagement. TikTok rewards products that can be showcased naturally within creators’ content, not just those with strong listings.
